Psychotherapy

Is Therapy Scary?

The short answer is it can be!

Therapy can be an effective treatment for various mental and emotional problems. Talking about your thoughts and feelings with a supportive person can make you feel better. It can be very healing, in and of itself, to voice your worries or talk about something that’s weighing on your mind. Additionally, it feels lovely to be heard and validated in a way close friends and family can not.

Therapists are professionally-trained listeners who can highlight some things we can overlook while helping us overcome emotional challenges and make positive changes in our life. You don’t have to be diagnosed with a mental health problem to benefit from therapy.

Knowing that a therapeutic hour is between 45-55 minutes is essential. Sometimes bringing a list into the session helps. On the other hand, sometimes you will leave therapy angry in general or maybe even upset with your clinician. After this anger is processed, there tends to be breakthroughs and growth. Please feel free to communicate your feelings with your therapist. Often, there is what we refer to as a therapy hangover for a few days post-session. This is just sadness, exhaustion, or numbness from processing what you are working on in therapy. It is normal and tends to come and go.

Be ready to set goals! Only a tiny amount of therapeutic change occurs in the actual therapy room. How you apply what you learn and make changes in life really brings about meaningful change.

Finally, not everyone in your life will be thrilled that you are in therapy. Change can trigger conflict! When you begin to make healthier choices, people in your life who support harmful tendencies often become intimidated or even rejected by you. Since you are experiencing growth and change, and they did not. The healthier you is a test to them. You may set and enforce boundaries that never existed. Sometimes the toxicity of the friends and family around you become all too apparent and unappealing.  Marriages may end. Family estrangement may occur. Ultimately, you will build a new community that accepts you.  That can be very exciting and scary.
